Frequently Asked Questions

How is the AP Calculus AB composite score calculated?
Your composite score (out of 108) is the sum of your Multiple Choice and Free Response sections. The MCQ raw score is multiplied by 1.2, and the FRQ raw score is multiplied by 1.0 to ensure both sections contribute exactly 50% to your final grade.
What is a "good" score for a 5 on the AB exam?
While the curve changes yearly, you typically need a composite score of approximately 68 to 71 out of 108 (about 63-66%) to earn a 5. A score of 54+ usually results in a 4, and 42+ usually results in a 3.
Are there penalties for wrong answers?
No, the AP Calculus AB exam does not use "guessing penalties." Your score is based solely on the number of questions answered correctly. It is always in your best interest to provide an answer for every Multiple Choice question.
How many FRQs are on the AP Calculus AB exam?
The exam includes 6 Free Response Questions. Each is worth 9 points, for a total of 54 points. Two questions allow the use of a graphing calculator, while the remaining four are strictly non-calculator.
Is the curve for AB different from the Calculus BC exam?
Yes. Although both exams are out of 108 points, the grading curves differ based on difficulty and student performance. Unlike BC students, AB students do not receive a subscore; they receive one single grade for the entire course material.
